Instructions for the Speaker: What questions should be put to the organizers before the speech?

Whom must you speak to?

This question will help in the analyses of the audience, for who knows the segments and their motives better than the organizers?

Don’t be afraid to seem boring and put detailed questions. The better you clarify the requirements of the audience, the deeper the content is. That is useful both for you and the organizers.

Who speaks before you, who — after you?

It is to your advantage to think in advance about the context, in which the audience will be — what speeches they will listen to before you, and what speeches after.

Why so?

This knowledge will help to orientate in the logic of the measurement and think over understandable ties among other speaker’s themes.

How much time is given for the speech?

Timing is an important part of the preparation. Clarify from the organizers what time framework you must place the content in.

Don’t forget about the work with questions.

Learn what format the communication with the audience will be organized. For example, questions may be put online into the chat, or the participants will put them just after the speech.

Is there a single pattern for the presentation?

If you put this question in time, we guarantee you will economize the time and nerves.

There is a pattern-excellent! No need to invent the form, it was done by others.

There is no pattern — OK! Then what demands to the presentation?

How does the place for the performance look?

Ask the organizers to take a photo of the place or go on an excursion. This will help to better orientate in space and feel better while speaking.

Clarify where you must stand, what distance is between you and the audience and what color the hall walls are. The latter will be useful for the presentation.

Will there be a microphone? What to do if it is in disorder?

Microphones are different — for example, sometimes they hang clip-microphones on the speakers (as on the TVhosts). Sometimes microphones are absent and you must speak loudly and distinctly for everybody to hear.

If the microphone doesn’t work, it’s important to know whom to address.

Whom to ask for help if there is a state of emergency?

Alas, we don’t live in an ideal world — equipment gets damaged, people get ill and do not come on time. Learn in advance the contact (better several) for force majeure.

Who helps in the decision of the problem at the moment? Even if nothing happens the feeling of safety will help to worry less and concentrate on the essence.

Will the participants have lunch?

We don’t joke, it’s an important question. Especially if it’s necessary to be at the place early in the morning or late in the evening.

A hungry speaker is an angry speaker. Take care of yourself in advance and clarify if there will be some meals at the place or where to get some food.
